Perana

Anthonie vd Walt (Jack Hammer's lead guitarist) has successfully completed his first short film.

Tonie produced the film PERANA that will be screened for the first time on 24 November 06.

About the PERANA

Between 1970 and 1973 a Johannesburg based engineer, Basil Green, was authorised by Ford (South Africa) Product Engineering to produce a modified version of the 3000GT Capri. Green had already produced a tweaked MkII Cortina which was supplied with a V6 engine, so it was a natural progression for him to produce a modified Capri.

A 302 Mustang V8 (5 litre) was swapped for the Essex V6 and was fitted with a Motorsport camshaft, solid lifters and four-barrel Holley 460 CFM carburetor. This engine was capable of over 280 bhp, but was detuned to around 240 bhp for the production car, with ride height lowered by 50mm and the body-shell strengthened to take the huge torque supplied by the Mustang engine. Although the original production run was for 800 "Perana" Capris it is estimated that only 500 actually left the factory. The name Perana was a deliberate misspelling of the fish Pirana.

The Perana was the only Capri officially supplied with a V8 engine, and as such was perfect for racing. The 500 or so cars produced meant that homologating was not a problem, and the Perana was raced in South Africa under the name Z181. Basil Green himself won the South African Championship three times, but unfortunately the Z181 was banned from competing after 1970 as it had won all but one of the races that year !

At this point Z181, which can be seen in this film, was stored in Basil Green's workshop for a number of years and was finally sold to an oval track driver in the then South West Africa.

Peter Lindenberg found the car in 1987 and proceeded to rebuild it from scratch. It is now exactly as it raced and has been checked out by Basil Green himself, who is a personal friend of Peter. Peter now races the car regularly in local Historic racing events. Power-plant is a 4 bolt main 302 Ford V8, which is fed by 4x48 down draft twin choke Webers, and puts out around 400 horsepower. It still runs a standard 4 speed Ford top loader gearbox and the original diff.

Local legend, Peter Lindenberg, has been racing this familiar Gunston coloured Capri Perana for the longest time and believe it or not, this is still the ultimate race car that dominates the podium.

The Perana has done it's last race, and will only feature at invitational and prestige events. But the legend will live on in this exciting short film.
